Thin Films
Growth and characterisation of nanometric films

Films thinner than 100 nm have relevant applications in the fields of optics and mechanics. They are also a growing field of research for coatings with advanced optical, electronics or mechanical properties.
Performance of such films during operation is determined by the deposition parameters as well as substrate preparation. During the running-in phase of deposition processes it is useful to determine morphology of films grown under variable process conditions, presence of defects, film uniformity, surface roughness. In addition, it is essential an assesment of film-substrate adhesion and mechanical properties such as elasticity, scratch and wear resistance, as well as hardness.
High precision instruments are therefore required both during the growht and the characterisation of the film.
